We want to make the right decisions but often we lack Trusted Information.  Sometimes we have the right information but the wrong processes, policies, people.  Sometimes its impossible to even know which part of the system is wrong, so we go with out gut.  Business Schools have turned stomach-based decision-making into a management religion.  But in an aged of endless information, hugely complex organizations, and global competition decision-making without facts and organizaitonal alignment is just too risky.  We've all seen the consequences over the past four years - The Credit Crisis, Sovereign Debt Crisis, and global recession.

Without Trusted Information, optimized Business processes will produce sub-optimal results every time. And Business process failures will impact data quality, security, and privacy. This isn't a simple causal loop. Its a highly correlated and symbiotic relationship that organizations need to control to optimize their business.

IT solutions play a pivotal role helping organizations see both sides of the equation.  People and Process, Coordination and Cooperation, also play important roles.  IT and Business need to collaborate effectively, providing seamless ways to govern both the uses of information and the people and processes that together lead to sustainable business value and risk mitigation.

We know in our hearts how to do these things.  Getting our organizations to understand what we know, and how all the pieces can fit and work together is the central challenge of Data Governance.

We want a system of governance, not a project.  We want Power, Politics, Metrics, Security, Privacy, Stewardship, and Policy to work towards, not against, common goals.  And we want IT solutions that facilitate these complex relationships.

Are we there yet?  Not quite, but we're getting close and this one day event is designed to explore just how close we've come and what yet remains to be done.  Its part of a larger set of Data and Information Governance Sessions being hosted by IBM at the Information on Demand Conference in Las Vegas.

Join this meeting as the starting point in your journey on the Information Governance Track at IBM's IOD Conference.  Its a great place to meet your Community Peers, Network and build relationships, and meet some of the experts in the new industry called Information Governance.
